The Importance of Sleep
There is not a single biological function of the body that isn’t improved with adequate and healthy sleep, and conversely, there isn’t a biological function that isn’t impaired with insufficient and poor sleep. So, if you’ve been diagnosed with a sleep disorder
like sleep apnea, this should be a wakeup call to take your diagnosis seriously.
Right now, there are tens of thousands of Australians just like you with sleep apnea who are under successful treatment and enjoying a better quality of life because of it.
And the great thing is, you could be one of them too!
You may already know that snoring, and of course, not breathing while sleeping, is obviously dangerous. So, even if you’re not suffering from the usual symptoms like feeling tired throughout the day, your health is at risk.
Some people think they’re ‘fine’ because they don’t have these usual symptoms, failing to remember that sleep apnea means you literally stop breathing and your brain and body are starved of oxygen during sleep, so even if you don’t feel ‘symptomatic’ you’re still putting your overall health and wellbeing at risk.
Failing to treat Sleep apnea may lead to an increased risk of:
- Heart attack
- Alzheimer and dementia
- Weigh gain and metabolic issues
- Reduced Libido and erectile disfunction
So, if you’re diagnosed this is the time to realise this is serious. While you may feel fine now, and it’s hard to imagine how this might affect you later on in life and you have a chance to mitigate this risk through successful treatment…
The Australian government is certainly taking the issue seriously. If you’re diagnosed with a severe disorder, your driver’s license may be reported to your States transport department, and you may be held liable of a motor vehicle accident if you haven’t been treated.
For commercial drivers, this is even more strongly upheld. Each year, there’s an obligation to prove you’re being treated effectively, which is something Synergy Sleep also manages for many patients.
Now, if you’ve already purchased a CPAP machine and you’re finding it hard to use, or simply finding that it’s not working to help treat your sleep apnea, it’s important we say this now: don’t give up.
Your CPAP machine may save your life if used properly. The key word here is ‘if used properly.’ So, if you’re considering stopping because of difficulty with the CPAP pressure, or you’re finding your mask doesn’t fit properly, or any other issue that can occur, there’s help available.
Often, you just need to talk to an expert in CPAP therapy and sleep health, as they’ll be able to help you review your therapy and manage things to make you comfortable. And, if you’re still confused simply contact our clinic to speak
with any of our experienced sleep staff.
So please take your diagnosis seriously, and remember, there’s no excuse to ignore your diagnosis and get it treated properly when there is affordable and effective treatment available with payment plans to ensure everybody can access successful treatment and wake up refreshed!
